New Evinrude G2 Reviews

The new Evinrude E-TEC G2 outboards have a distinctive shape and interchangeable side panels that let the boat builder or the customer mater the motor color to the boat. I had a 87 Evinrude 200 that i bought used that had a fair share of problems but still on its original powerhead. Turbo, Thanks for the pics, I have to say after looking at your rig, I am warming up to the new look.

I've got a trouble free hundred hours on mine. The only issue I had was a sensor fault that a software update took care of. I'm burning 20% less fuel and my oil consumption is less but I honestly have not quantified that yet. The fly-by-wire and integral power steering is just sick and the single rigging tube that doesn't move really cleaned up my transom. The great aspect of the stationary rigging tube is the ability to place a cooler and/or bleed barrel on the transom.

The performance has to be felt to be believed. I re-rigged my boat from a pair of original 250hp E-TEC's to a pair of Gen 2's and with the same 19' pitch props my top speed went from 44 to 52mph and I now cruise at 38mph burning right around 19 GPH which is right at the 2.0mpg mark which is excellent for a 28' Weldcraft Cuddy King. The boat is headed to Alaska later this month and I'll report back after I get another 100hours under my belt. Good luck and happy shopping!!! Click to expand.Actually, it does. They are more efficient, produce more power with a smaller motor, and require less maintenance. Not to mention if you are keeping it in a slip, the motor trims way out of the water, leading to less repairs.

The gas mileage will pay for the oil. All of that said, it is a superior motor and gives a much better power to weight ratio than a four stroke. It also gives off 75% less emissions when compared to Yamis and Mercs. My only concern is the styling of the smaller motors, they are pretty damn ugly Imo.

175 and up is better looking. Ok, here is my experience with these motors.

I work as a contractor overseas in Dubai training their Coast Guard how to drive, tow, navigate, high speed handling, yada yada yada on small boats up to 35 ft. So everyday I put at least 6 hrs on Etechs for months straight at a time running it harder than any weekend warrior going fishing. Well from my everyday experience these engines are not even close to a Honda which I also ran for my last 10 yrs in the U.S Coast Guard. The fuel economy is close at lower rpms but the amount of oil we burn is a lot especially once those things get broken in and at WOT. But mind you we run hard at times going 3/4 throttle for hours at 25kts to 45kts.

The low end torque especially for towing sucks and we constantly blow lower ends a lot more and easier than we did Honda's. Everyday 1-3 of our 20 boat fleet is broken due to every reason in a engine. Opening up those cowlings and working on your power head is a major pain in the ass. I'm not here to give you advice just my 2cents between my experience on 2stroke vs 4stroke. Our engines are a little older so the new Etechs must be better. On my personal boats I have guess? Only Honda's had 1-225 with over 3000hrs!!

Good luck I hope this helps!! Ok, here is my experience with these motors.
